Outdoors, mapping and positioning technologies merge to form one single service thanks to the global availability of the GPS. No such service exists inside buildings due to the extremely poor accuracy of the GPS indoors. As a consequence, there are plenty of existing indoor positioning technologies (IPS): Beacons, Wi-Fi, Li-Fi, Ultrasounds, to name a few. None of those technologies is about to overtake the market because they all have their own set of benefits and drawbacks. So here, at Mapwize, we strongly believe that we have to be prepared to face the use of multiple indoor positioning technologies.
Accordingly, we took the initiative to solve this issue by creating the first unified framework to manage user position coming from any kind of indoor positioning technology. Since Openness is one of our core values, this framework, called Indoor Location is available as an Open Source project under the MIT License.
Several major IPS providers are already available (Beacons, Wi-Fi, Li-Fi, etc.) and ready to use. Contact us if you need any additional provider or if you want to develop yours.
